Bring a Trade School construction experience into your school!

Trade School is a hands-on education experience session that is delivered free-of-charge in Oxfordshire secondary schools by Witney-based building firm Wain & Francis Ltd in partnership with ACE Training. All students are able to build and construct with real site materials under the guidance of working professionals with current up to date site credentials.

Each Trade School experience covers many aspects of building with links to historical methods, modern methods and technology, maths, science, health and safety, PPE, waste management and renewables.

Why Trade School?

The construction industry has a major skills shortage, not just in Oxfordshire, but across the UK. This not only means that qualified, experienced tradesmen can command high wage rates, but also that there is a major need for more young people to regard a career in construction as a serious option.

Trade School creator, Wain & Francis Ltd Director Richard Francis, worked with ACE Training - a specialist construction training centre in Kidlington - to secure funding from the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership to take the programme to local schools. Mr Francis said: “I’ve employed Apprentices for the past decade and it concerns me how the trades are overlooked by so many young people and their parents as a career option. As a result, we now have a major construction skills shortage and Trade School will enable us within the industry to work with schools to inform and inspire students by letting them get hands on with bricks and mortar and speak to real tradesmen.”

Hands on careers education

Trade School is a fantastic way to showcase the many and varied career opportunities available in construction in a fun and hands on way, giving students a real opportunity to find out for themselves what’s involved.

Teachers can take part too!

“We found Trade School extremely beneficial; it has really added to our Careers Education landscape.” Carterton Community College, January 2016
